Yarn Along ~ June 15, 2011

For more Yarn Along goodness, visit Ginny at Small Things.

I have been trying to carve out more time for reading lately.  I really miss enjoying a good read.  Since the weather has actually turned summer-like around here I have been able to sit outside and get a few moments of peace while the little ones enjoy themselves.

So I have been reading through the magazine Fit Pregnancy.  I covered the cover because it was kind of nasty.  Why is it that all magazines about healthy living have half naked people on them?  Do you have to go around in a swimsuit to be healthy?  Don't healthy people wear t-shirts and pants?  Maybe a dress on Sundays?

I am also reading The Forgotten Garden. I had to laugh when I saw how many people are or have read this.  I totally missed this.  Must be all the craziness around here that has made it nearly impossible for me to keep up with things.  Anyway, I saw this book at the store and read the first few pages and decided I would get it.  I don't usually do this anymore.  I am rather skeptical of modern fiction these days.  I keep getting burned.  Either it is some nasty pornographic novel or they put one scene in a perfectly lovely novel that is so nasty I can't get past it.  So I am hoping I will make it through this book.

Last on my reading agenda is A Little Way of Homeschooling. I am DEVOURING this book.  It is like it was written just for me.  I have been struggling with the whole idea of unschooling all year, ever since I hurt my back in the fall.  And we have indeed been on and off again unschoolers.  So I am getting a lot of meat from this book and have decided to read some of the works of John Holt while I am at it.

IMG_9003As for knitting... yeah, well, not much time.  I have been reading, chasing kids, taking kids places, visiting the ocean, friends, and running to appointments.  I am thinking I might actually not go anywhere tomorrow.  We will see.  I am not holding my breath.  Anyway, I am still working on that dress but I also picked up a quick project, a wool diaper cover for Sweet Pea.

Wow I wrote a lot.  I wonder if any of you will actually read all of this, lol!  Anyway, happy yarning along!  Oh and don't forget the giveaway for Saint Michael ends TODAY June 15th at 5 pm PST!!!

  1. Of course I read it all! lol :)

I completely understand you on modern fiction. I got burned pretty bad on The Time Traveler's Wife. Very popular a while back. "Nasty" is a very good adjective for it. I know now that I will never pick anything up that author puts out.

I'm so glad that you are reading A Little Way of Homeschooling! I actually have an extra copy and was going to do a giveaway, but when I saw it on your sidebar wish list a few days ago I thought I would just send it to you. I just finished it and throughout reading it I kept thinking of you and your post you did a few month back on re-reading what Lissa has written about on her blog. So, anywho, I guess that answers that and I'll go ahead with the giveaway. ;)

And as for that St.Michael doll, I can't wait to find out that I've won! lol ;)

  2. Kelly,
I was thinking of The Time Traveler's Wife when I wrote that, lol! Can you believe I actually tried her new one and same thing... one totally nasty weird thing and I just threw it across the room, lol.

Aw, you are so sweet!! I just got the book and have almost finished it. By staying up way too late, but there you go. Do a giveaway! Everyone will love it!

  3. I hope you enjoy the Forgotten Garden...I usually stick to the classics to avoid any "nasty" surprises but I quite enjoyed this one.

  4. Hope you enjoy them all! The homeschooling one sounds interesting

  5. I'll have to get my hands on that book! Sounds interesting!

I'm wondering if that bonnet in your header is from "made by rae?" It looks just like it and I JUST finished one tonight...my first. I think I may be hooked. I'm going to post about it next week when I get some rompers done to go with them, but it looks so similar I just had to ask!

  6. Dear Amy,
I would be very interested in your final recommendation of the uschooling book. I am intrieged as I tend to think we are heading this way with a few other things thrown in.
Hope you are feeling well.I think I forgot to say congratulations on your pregnancy.
    God Bless

  7. I think you will enjoy "The Forgotten Garden." I thought of "Water for elephants" when I read "one scene." uh-- (shudder). Nothing nasty in the one you are reading. :-)

  8. Having just read Water for Elephants, I think I would enjoy The Forgotten Garden. I wonder if it's about me and my garden???? I definitely need to read the Little Way of Homeschooling!

  9. The book A Little Way of Homeschooling sounds interesting!

  10. Did read it all, not at all too much! Just a busy life, it seems. Enjoy!

  11. Forgotten Garden definitely a winner. Thirteenth Tale, Woman in White, no nasties there. And unschooling? Thumbs up from me too, though it is a challenging path requiring a LOT of faith :). The book sounds very interesting indeed. Looking forward to hearing more about it :).

  12. I should really add Forgotten Garden to my reading list...you're right, everyone seems to be reading it and giving it a thumbs up. Intrigued by the unschooling book as well. Happy Wednesday!

  13. I can't get my hands on Forgotten Garden to save my life... that means I must must must read it.

  14. I liked the book you are reading and it was refreshingly un-nasty to me!

  15. So glad that you all have such positive things to say about the Forgotten Garden! I feel a little safer now, lol.

Gretchen, it is that bonnet. I LOVE that pattern, isn't it great??? Oh man, I have made two now and still plan on making more!

I will write more about The Little Way. I am in love with this book. I am just full of love I guess, lol.

  16. A couple weeks ago I had a copy of The Forgotten Garden, but I had also checked out her first book (The House at Riverton) which took me longer to get through than I thought it would, and I only had 2 days left before The Forgotten Garden was due back to the library. Since I couldn't renew it, I just took it back. Perhaps I should put it back on my requests list... You'll have to let me know how you like it!
